These driftwood pieces were temporarily given to me by an Austrian friend with the commission of commemorating the small Canadian island she had once owned. After selling the island, these two pieces of driftwood came to symbolize the love and connection she felt for her small island. They sat on my studio desk for a couple of years. I would often pick them up and hold them, studying every little crevice and grain of embedded sand. I tried to image what they had been before becoming driftwood. I understood how important they were to my friend. I wanted to elevate their driftwood identity to being one of antiquity. Cerulean and phthalo blue were added to one of the pieces, to honor the water and the sky surrounding the island.
